Last month I featured Pearl’s Place. That is, Pearl Lowe’s large country house that is a verital rock ‘n’ roll love affair between faded glamour and chic country house style. This month it’s the turn of Pearl’s newly finished bohemian beach house that features a stunning kitchen by deVOL. This lovely holiday home is just minutes from the beach and an absolute gem. Totally fitting for a little summer hideaway to fill up with house guests and family.
Take a Look
It must be said that Pearl has an exceptional eye for making a room look casually amazing. She also has an enviable address book of little vintage haunts and hideaway places to ensure she has a never-ending supply of textiles, furniture and quirky, unusual objects and decorative ornaments. I’ve been pouring over these photographs for ages, constantly spotting new little delights and unexpected pairings. I’m quite envious of her ability to put together objects that most of us would discard as junk and make them look as if they belong.
The kitchen itself is a Shaker kitchen and is just one long run of ‘Linen’ cupboards and a ‘Scullery Yellow’ prep table with a copper worktop. This seems to be a trend lately and one I’m completely behind. There’s absolutely no need to fill up a kitchen with fitted cupboards. Instead a simple run of cabinets looks much more unfitted, and wall shelves allow for often-used things to be close at hand, while also providing a platform for decorative objects.
Pearl and husband Danny chose handmade tiles for their splashback because they are tactile, pale and have a sort of beachy feel to them. They also opted for a fluted sink and a beautiful luminescent marble that kept the whole space feeling airy and light. While a Haberdasher’s wall cupboard was the perfect extra touch.
Its the endless little vignettes that make this kitchen so appealing and satisfying. But it is Pearl’s ability to create a really functional family kitchen that is also seriously desirable and totally welcoming and comfortable that is most impressive. You instantly want to stay and hang out. You want to admire the space but you feel drawn to its homely and comforting vibe.
This is definitely a gift. Acknowledging every aspect of a room’s function and not just making it look good. That is the true sign of a talent and also a testament to Pearl’s love of family and friends and gathering them together in a warm and inviting and totally cool space.
