One of this year’s projects at home is going to be to finish the garden we started last year. Our half built pergola was always intended to be a chill out zone with comfy sofa’s and lanterns and I’m looking forward to getting it finished. We live in a town house so the garden is going to be quite contemporary, but if I had to design a garden that fulfilled my fantasies it would be something else indeed.
I’ve always dreamt of a romantic garden. One that brings to mind an Edwardian country garden with red brick walls, rambling roses, and full herbaceous borders. It would come complete with greenhouse and potting shed – fragrant with the smell of damp earth and sun warmed blossoms. The dining table and chairs would be positioned on the manicured lawn and afternoon tea would be served at four on the dot every day. The drone of the bees would be the only sound, with the occasional dink of the croquet bat hitting the ball.
One can dream.

But one can also recreate some of this English country house idyll in the back yard too. With a little help from Harley and Lola.
All you have to do is choose furniture and accessories wisely and you can emulate the romance and tradition in a more contemporary way. Select dining sets that are made of natural wicker or rattan and have a more traditional shape; the addition of cushions ensures they are as comfy as any country gentlewoman would prefer.

I’d add a parasol of course to provide that extra level of comfort, more cushions (you can never have enough in my mind but choose ones with a more robust fabric), throws for when the night gets chilly, and a rug underfoot to keep feet away from the damp. You can buy outdoor rugs but any rug will do if you are going to bring it in at night and out of the rain.
You may have already guessed that there is no place in this garden for garish colours or, dare I even mention the word, plastic. Natural materials only if you please. The afore mentioned wicker, linens, metal and glass. Lanterns and tealight holders will provide extra ambiance at dusk and because I don’t have any servants yet, simple food will be served in bowls and on platters.
So you see, romance isn’t dead in the garden.

I would love a day bed, it looks so comfy and cosy to curl up in. When would I have time though…..however I would make time!

With a day bed beckoning I reckon you’d make time Stephanie ?

My dream garden is the same as yours. We have the red brick wall but sadly, little else. We viewed a property last week with just over an acre and although we decided the house wasn’t for us, it was so hard to say no to the potential of all that space.
deardesigner
With an acre you could have several garden rooms Rachel. I can imagine how tempting that was ?
Becky
OOh that day bed look delightful

Doesn’t it just Becky ?

I’ve never had a garden of my own but we’re moving hopefully to a flat with a garden, and I really cannot wait to get out there and make it beautiful. Some wonderful inspiration here, afternoon tea in the garden sounds perfect! X

We just need the weather to go with it Cate. Hope you get the flat ?
Rachel
You’ve described it so beautifully – I can hear the dink of the croquet bats! Lovely furniture ideas that look perfect for an quintessential English country garden.

Thanks Rachel x

That day bed, I long for something like that in the garden…and a clear few weeks of warm, balmy nights to enjoy it in…who knows, we might get lucky this year? Maybe you could bring in some rambling roses for a little soft romance against your contemporary look? ?
deardesigner
Not a bad idea Tiff. Might just do that ?

Love your selection for the garden. We are finally getting around to starting on our garden this year. We do have a gorgeous old apple tree, so romance is definitely on the cards for a theme. x
deardesigner
That sounds like a great starting point Karen. Sadly no trees in my garden ?

It’s taken us dreadfully long on our own back garden – the weather doesn’t make it easy for us does it?! Also, where is Spring dammit?! However your inspiration is just so inviting and tranquil. There’s something so universally appealing about the English garden, isn’t there? I want one too ? xx
deardesigner
No, the weather doesn’t make it easy Kimberly. Your garden is lovely though. Or has the dog dug it up like ours has?
Caroline Davis
What lovely things! Bit sad thinking of the just -finished garden and patio we left behind. Back to square one now, but it will be exciting getting new ideas like this!! Xx

I’m in the same boat hun. We had just finished a brand new deck and then we moved. Oh well ?
Hannah
I really need to get some relaxing furniture in the garden, bring on the long summer nights! oh and I love the idea of an outdoor rug!
deardesigner
Yes Hannah, bring them on. Well, let me get the garden finished first ?

Can it actually be sunny already? Am getting more obsessed with garden furniture and decor… I must be growing up now surely!? ? x
deardesigner
Nothing wrong with that Karen. ? Wish it were sunny here x
Carole
Oh yes, a garden with a beautiful place to chill, flowers, a veggie patch… I’m dreaming of the same thing but right now I need to get a skip to have the old kitchen units and other rubbish removed first, so I’m a million miles away from that dream. Lovely inspirational post, thank you ?
deardesigner
I feel your impatience Carole. We’re so busy with the cottage, the garden has remained started but not finished for nearly a year now. One day it will get done ?
