I Spy – Betsy Eby

If I had to give advice on buying art, I’d always say, just buy what you love. Art has to be a heart over head decision. You have to be drawn into the piece, to want to gaze at it for hours and never get tired of it. And that’s how I feel about this collection from Betsy Eby.

Babylon’s Falling, Encaustic on canvas on panel, 70 ” x 55″
Betsy creates her work in wax encaustic which uses wax to secure pigments onto the canvas. Oil paint is applied to the canvas as well, creating a multilayer piece. The layers and gestures of her paintings evoke in viewers a rhythm that is inspired by the music from her childhood and the natural world that surrounds her two studios.

Working in both Maine and Georgia, these two places heavily influence her work. The rich blues are reminiscent of Maine’s seafront and the depth of the black recalling the Georgian night skies.
