Double But Less Trouble
It’s time to get serious. I mean it. Christmas is just around the corner. Really, you can ignore that fact if you like, but it will come back and haunt you sooner or later. And we all manage to find the time to plan the presents, the decorations and the parties, but can we actually manage to cook the dinner?
Kitchen in the new house
I’ve spent too many Christmas holidays without ample worktop space, without room to pile the dirty dishes, and without an oven large enough to accommodate the turkey and all the trimmings. But that is going to change this year. It’s our first Christmas with the whole family in our new house and I’m going to sing the praises of my double oven. (See Amica for a vast range). It’s already earning its keep and I’m going to tell you why.

- My kitchen is not large by any means but a double under-the-counter oven manages to fit in lots of features without taking up too much valuable space.
- The top oven is the more conventional one and is the classical heating mode for most dishes. Which means you don’t have to throw away all of your favourite cookbooks just because they don’t allow for fan-assisted timings.
- The top oven includes a handy grill for browning things off and cooking steaks, sausages and kebabs.
- The bottom oven is fan-assisted which reduces cooking time immensely. Honestly I used to cook casseroles for up to three hours in our old oven but in the new one you can halve that time.

- Because it’s fan-assisted both shelves in the bottom oven can be used at the same time, and if you are baking a cake for instance, you don’t have to remember to swap the Victoria sponge sandwiches around to make sure they both brown in the same way.
- You can cook dishes that need different temperatures at the same time. This one really blew my socks off. After years of waiting until the roast was cooked before putting in the apple pie, I can now cook both together!
- You can also use the top oven for keeping things warm or for warming the plates while cooking in the bottom one.
- And this one won’t be listed in any kitchen brochure but I actually find it useful that I can store my larger pans in the oven I’m not using instead of taking up cupboard space.
So, this Christmas? Bring it on! And you’re all invited.
