Top Tile Trends That Are Hot Right Now

As we all get more adventurous with our colour choices and our love for bold wallpaper, I’m also seeing a lot more courage in our choice of tiles. Tiles are no longer just a practical application to protect our walls from grease and water. And no longer just a sensible option for floors that get a lot of dirty wear and tear. Tiles are another fabulous excuse to flex our design bravery, show our personality and throw caution to the wind. Even homeowners and designers who are still favouring old faithfuls, are finding new ways to use them. Plus, there’s a whole range of stunning designs to choose from. These are my top tile trends for anyone who is looking to create a scheme that reflects them, their style and no compromise.

Mix and Match

Bolder colours are making a splash. Even black. It was only a matter of time before our colour choices for paint transferred to bathroom tiles. And this bathroom steals more than just colour from our living room schemes. A black feature wall has translated into a shower enclosure, and a picture-rail effect has been created with blue and white tiles. Dark colours like this benefit from copper or brass accessories to ramp up the sumptuousness.

Botanical Greens

You know a decorating trend is here to stay when it starts appearing on tiles. The ever-popular trend for anything botanical is a case in point. By keeping the design subtle it’s possible to mix with other colours and styles too. So here we have green fronds appearing almost as wallpaper, with a block of millennial pink. Two trends in one, just as any other room in the house would mix them.

Hot Metal

Tiles that mimic the effect of metal sheets are very hot right now. They are best as large scale tiles so that grout lines are kept to a minimum, and add a sophisticated but rough edge to urban bathrooms. Pairing with other metals works, but they could look just as sensational juxtaposed with traditional white bathroom fixtures too. Add soft fluffy towels to counterbalance the hardness, and enjoy the effect of industrial hardness with no flakes of rust.

Arty Artisanal

Our penchant for pattern hasn’t gone away but today’s choice is moving more towards tiles that have a slightly aged, worn looking surface. Some even have chipped edges giving them an authentic air. The effect is one that imitates chic European city style and an interior that has evolved over the years, rather than started life on a designer’s moodboard.

Miles of Marble

Once only seen in expensive high-end bathrooms, marble is now a very affordable luxury. This is down to the availability now of Carrara marble effect tiles. Lifelike veining over a white backdrop, these gorgeous tiles are made from durable porcelain, and the overall effect is one of effortless style. These ones have a subtle matt finish, and can be used on both walls and floors throughout the home.

A Touch of Art Deco

Thanks to the current trend for black framed Crittal style windows, tiles that echo that era are cropping up. Their retro-tinged styling and high gloss finish hark back to that glamorous time, and the black edging tiles underline the look. And these are not just for bathrooms either. They are incredibly versatile and ideal for use in bathrooms, kitchens, diners and lounges. And perfect for those looking to emulate that New York apartment look in their own interior.

Something Fishy

With their interesting fish scale shape (which is another throwback to the Gatsby twenties), these tiles will create a striking feature wall or statement floor. They can be stunning in bright colours which give them more of a Moroccan flavour, but also lovely in white. They certainly give white metro tiles a run for their money.
