Plantation shutters. I’m a fan. Such a big fan that I couldn’t resist a shameless alliteration in the title of this post. And it’s not just words. Plantation shutters really are tasteful, trendy, utterly timeless and also totally practical. I have no regrets about choosing them for my current house. And I’ll probably use them again when we move into our ‘in the country’ forever home. So I’m going to tell you exactly why they are such a good idea for so many architectural styles of property.
All images are from Shutterly Fabulous who provide a bespoke plantation shutter service to homes all across the UK.
They always look elegant wherever they are placed. Because they are fitted snugly into the window reveal they always look part of the architecture. And they look as good from the outside as well as in. What’s more, whether you have a grand Edwardian mansion or a small new-build semi they add a sophistication that no other window treatment can match. All of that is without the lovely effect they give inside when the sun’s streaming in, and the slats create such pleasing stripes of light and shade. I have to admit that my penchant is usually for white shutters. They are smart, clean-looking and keep a room looking light and fresh. But I do appreciate sometimes that wood will suit a room better. It will all depend on your own personal style.
Trendy for good reason. Once you have decided on your style and had them fitted, you can just forget about them. They are a one time purchase. No faffing with metres of fabric, no dry cleaning bills, and no repairs of broken pulleys. Plantation shutters are strong and durable. They actually manage to make small windows look more substantial (new-builds can sometimes have such mean windows!), and they are a good solution for awkward, large bay windows. The latter can be problematic for bespoke curtain treatments which are expensive and difficult to fit around bends and corners. In fact whatever your size or shape of window you can have plantation shutters that are tailored to fit.
Utterly timeless because they will never go out of style. As you know, I write a lot about trends, but some interiors fashions really are utterly timeless. Examples? Crystal chandeliers, metro tiles, black and white combinations, velvet sofas. And plantation shutters.
So now you know how good they’ll look. What more reasons do you need? Well for starters they are the best solution for homes that need some privacy from prying eyes. You can slant the slats up or down depending on how and where you need to block sun, light or nosy neighbours. They can help to control temperatures by keeping rooms cool in summer and warmer in winter. They are dead easy to clean. Just a quick wipe with a damp cloth is all they need. Last but not least, they will add value to a property. Just think of all those potential buyers who are thinking how lovely that they won’t have to worry about window treatments. You can almost hear the cogs whirring.
