I’m such a massive fan of hardwood floors and rugs. It’s a timeless style that looks good anywhere. In any style of house, of any age. But not just any rugs. The best ones for me, are the ones that look as if they have been in the family for years. Passed down through the generations. Or at the very least, obtained on a far-flung trip and haggled for, over a tiny glass of Turkish coffee. I love the idea that rugs can tell a story. So, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. You can obtain this look without travelling far, or having a tussle with the relatives. And at a very reasonable price. I’m talking about the rugs currently available from French Connection Home.
Large Burgundy Tile Rug – £155 – 180 x 180 cm
So why my fascination with rugs?
Rugs can make a statement in a room. They can add colour, or pattern or both. But I love it when the effect is more subtle. When the colours are faded and give the impression of being worn. As if feet have been walking over them for many years.
Medium Vintage King Rug – £125 – 120 x 180 cm and Poppy Field Runner £95
They can be layered to give a bohemian feel. What was once a necessity to hide worn patches, is now a design statement. Runners can be used not just in narrow halls, but in any areas where too much floor is showing. Where footfall is greater. They lead the eye, and invite you to walk this way.
Waves of Colour Rug – £125 – 120 x 180 cm
And yes, they can lead or follow the colour scheme. But keep other loud patterns confined to a cushion or two. You want to keep the impression of not trying too hard.
Blue Jasmine Rug – £125 – 120 x 180 cm
And rugs are also great for defining areas in a room. Invaluable in open-plan spaces where they have the effect of anchoring the furniture to the floor and emphasising the different purposes of a space.
