Loft Living in Amsterdam

I’m not sure why I keep getting drawn to apartments in Amsterdam. Maybe it’s the beautiful architecture. Maybe it’s because it’s the one city that I could see myself settling in (after London of course). Maybe it’s because I’m fascinated with intelligent and thoughtful conversions. And Amsterdam seems to be full of those. Or maybe it’s because I just love the way the apartments make the most of the light and space.

This is another conversion by Standard Studio, an architecture and interior design firm based in the city. The apartment is in a typical canal house which dates from 1752, and used to be a sugar refinery two and a half centuries ago.

The client, a young stockbroker, commissioned the architects to completely gut the place and give it a new look. Previously it had been covered in plasterboard with low ceilings and tiny rooms but now it is a stunning contemporary loft that embraces the original character of the building. The wooden beams give a real sense of history and other materials, such as concrete, oiled oak and unfinished hot rolled steel hint at the previous industrial heritage.

The brief was to create an open plan interior with a ‘loft’ feel.

The living room was designed with a split level bar and dining area.

The kitchen is made from mat powder coated steel with marble tops and perfectly integrated high-end equipment. Of course.

Behind the kitchen is a walk-in wardrobe and bathroom with two rainfall showers.

The bedroom has a freestanding bath and at one end is the study area that can be closed off with sliding doors when necessary.

I love how the steel frames and the beams frame the rooms and how the light falls unimpeded across the living spaces.

I could move in tomorrow.

Amsterdam is my favorite city. I would move there today. No hesitation in buying a plane ticket right now and getting there. My family is not so happy about it so I keep postponing it indefinitely. Until one day, I’m sure.

Omg talk about hit me where it hurts. I love Amsterdam, so much. And then this space. Absolutely stunning. I grew up near a sugar refinery so I remember the smell very well, but it looks nothing like this!
