You’ll know from previous posts that I can’t resist a kitchen that has country style personalty. It’s the accessories in a kitchen that create warmth and ambiance after all. I just can’t get excited by a glossy minimalist room, no matter how beautiful. So give me a farmhouse feel, with flagstone floors, a scrubbed pine table and shelves full of knick knacks any day. And then add somewhere to sit with a book, herbs on the windowsill, and a dog curled up by the Aga and I’ll stay there all day. What’s even better is that a lot of the things that add to this look can be picked up second hand at boot fairs and on auction sites, although everything here is from one of my favourite shops Nordic House.
Take a Look
Teak Bar Stool, £230.
An artfully curated couple of shelves against some painted panelling is worth any amount of dusting in my book. And a restrained colour palette of fluted white china, metal, glass, and the occasional plant will work every time and never look cluttered. Not to mention the butler sink, wooden worktop, brass taps, and patterned floor tiles. They are pretty perfect too.
Curved Rattan Bench, £399.
And while it’s true not many kitchens have room for a sofa, this handsome rattan one doesn’t take up too much space and adds a lovely organic touch. It’s just perfect for chatting to the cook, shelling peas or waiting for the pot to boil. While straw hats, metal buckets, stag horns and wooden troughs can be picked up on your travels and if each one tells a story, even better.
Wood Display Ladder, £89.
An old wooden ladder make a perfect tea-towel rail. Add some hooks and it can be used to hang baskets for vegetables, pegs, and all the things you need to hand every day.
Oak and Rattan Bistro Chair, £195.
A handsome wooden chair can be squeezed into any odd corner, and when it’s not used for bottoms it would be very handy for dropping the shopping on, or folding the washing.
Large Retro Metal Wall Sign, £59.95.
And there’s always room for purely decorative items in the country style kitchen. Enamel signs can often be found in antiques shops, and can add a personal touch too.
