The current trend to re-imagine old buildings into modern living spaces is admirable but often challenging. I have to say it’s not always easy to reconfigure spaces that were once factories, farm buildings or schools into cosy workable homes for families for starters. But this lofty old schoolhouse in the centre of busy, bustling Brixton in London has successfully incorporated a kitchen into the old schoolgirls’ dining hall that looks absolutely stunning.

The white painted brick walls, the cool industrial height windows, and the original school floorboards fill this room with simple, original and historic beauty. Features that quite rightly have been preserved and celebrated. Just one simple run of deVOL Shaker cupboards, incorporating a dishwasher, an impressive fridge freezer and a big double pantry, form the basis of this contemporary but very pretty high-rise kitchen.

An existing Bulthaup island was kept in place and gives the space a slightly edgy industrial look that is so perfect for this room. While the stainless steel run with sink and hob works with the fridge, the knobs and handles and sockets, making it feel far from part of a past kitchen.

The kitchen’s layout faces into the vast schoolroom and from this vantage point feels very sociable and like being in an open restaurant kitchen or bar. Perching up at the ‘bar’ is surely one of the best places to find yourself while entertaining or having a simple supper.

Also very sympathetic to the design is the pared-back use of cupboards and the desire to keep the kitchen within a small section of the whole room, while making the absolute most of the unusually high ceilings.

Essentially this room is a completely open plan living space that also extends into the high walls of a beautiful private city garden. It’s cool, contemporary, and sympathetically designed to make the very most of this important building. It also shows the true flexibility of deVOL’s Shaker cupboards and how they fit so easily into any space they are put in. Who would have imagined that the Mushroom painted cupboards would be used in a Victorian schoolhouse kitchen and look so at home, softening the potentially austere room?
