A Beautiful Basement Kitchen Full of Light and Character

This year more than ever before, we have all found a new connection to our kitchens, our homes and our gardens. We have noticed the good and the bad bits, the parts we enjoy and the really annoying things we don’t. And we have vowed to change them so we can make the very best of what we have. We have begun to appreciate just how important it is to make our homes comfortable and beautiful and easy to be in. So hats off to the interior designer owner of this beautiful basement kitchen in Chiswick, London. To turn a basement (let’s face it they’re usually dark aren’t they?) into such a light filled and characterful space in the middle of a pandemic is a feat to be proud of.

This kitchen uses modular cupboards from the deVOL Real Shaker range and is split into three functional areas. First up, the sink run which is made up of beautiful open and closed storage. And unusually, the sink and tap are nestled right in the chimney breast complete with a fabulous marble splashback.

Then you’ve got the island, the centre of the action, the place to prep and cook and chat and just hang around.  It also has unmatched views right out through the incredible pea green metal-framed doors into a little sun trap of a garden.

And lastly, a whole room dedicated to storage and refrigeration. Here is a long floor-to-ceiling larder housing the family’s fridge freezer, a huge pantry and a space for a washing machine and dryer, all hiding away quietly behind lovely wooden doors. This is the ultimate run of storage and would keep you super organised.

Let’s talk about the colour choices! An opulent, almost blackened bespoke deep green for the main kitchen cupboards and a ‘Mushroom’ shade for the larder area, what a totally dreamy combination. A pretty pattern from the cool tiles underfoot and a happy pop of green from those metal doors.

And then there are the treasured curiosities dotted about the place. A real mixture of old against the new kitchen. Paintings, jugs, candlesticks and reclaimed furniture jostle for space and give this beautiful kitchen real character. It’s a real mixture of colours, textures, styling, and fun. Some people just have the knack!

Real Shaker Kitchens by deVOL are all made by hand in their Leicestershire workshops, prices start from £12,000.

I love the beautiful Basement Kitchen. Like you say it is usually dark in a basement, but you have really made the kitchen
a bright place looking out into sun-trap room of a garden. Looks very inviting.
