A few weeks ago I spent a very pleasant morning re-discovering the Heals flagship store at 196 Tottenham Court Road.  A morning of shopping, coffee and design talk in the building that has been the home of this very british store since 1840.  What’s not to love?

Did you know that Heals has been trading for over 200 years (they celebrated their second centenary in 2010) and that they started as a mattress making firm?  Knowing that, it’s very apt that in early February this year the second floor was transformed into the ultimate destination for all things sleep related.  Room sets and designer names at every turn to inspire and tempt us all.

In fact quite a few things have changed recently in this historic building.  There’s been a lot of re-organisation so that shopping is a lot easier.  The Gourmet Kitchen department is the ultimate destination for premium kitchenware, the Spa department in now a truly indulgent experience and there is an extensive list of new designer brands including collections from Clarissa Hulse, Julian Chichester, Cantori, Gervasoni, Blu Dot and Matthew Hilton for De La Espada.

And, always a place to pick up the perfect gift, there has been an influx of innovative and wonderfully crafted collections from the likes of Chisel & Mouse L’Objet, Cire Trudon and Alli Tomlin alongside much-loved Jonathan Adler, Georg Jenson, Kartell, LSA and Seletti.

And if you decide to visit, don’t leave without visiting the Cafe, which is now in partnership with the Quarter Group.  Not only is the food fresh and delicious, the space is serene and calming.  We’re talking Tom Dixon copper pendents, Ercol dining chairs and inviting solid oak tables.  Bliss.

I’ve always thought breakfast should be a lighthearted affair and it seems the guys at Rose and Grey agree.

Most families I know agree that breakfast can often be rushed and stressful in our busy lives.  So lets bring back a sense of humour and put things on our table that make us smile.

rose and grey milk jug

The cow milk jug is sure to be a talking point and looks much nicer than that milk carton.

rose and grey winners egg cup

The ‘Winner’ egg cup certainly put a smile on my face and it might encourage little ones to eat up!

rose and grey salt and pepper

Just add a little love with these two salt and pepper pots.

rose and grey mug

And strong tea for the man of the house.

rose and grey cookie jar

And if all else fails try a little bribery from the cookie jar?

Those of you who read Heart Home magazine regularly, and I sure hope it’s all of you, will remember the gorgeous home of Lou Rota in the latest issue.

Lou is best known for her decorative tableware of course, featuring vintage flowers and all manner of birds, creepy crawlies and unexpected wildlife.  Examples of her work can be seen above in the shot of her kitchen that the lovely Penelope Wincer took for Heart Home.

Well, Lou just launched a Vintage Plate Art Kit which includes everything you could need to upcycle your own vintage plates using some of her most popular designs.  Available on her own website or on the Not On the High Street site.

Or you could just buy some Lou did earlier.

I have fallen head over heels for this Ibride Yuan vase.

ibride - yuan vase

Not just a vase you understand.  It’s actually tableware that stacks into a vase shape.

ibride - yuan

Consisting of 4 plates, 4 bowls and 1 lid it is made of high quality, dishwashable melamine and the inside has the most exquisite decoration.

In addition there are another four plates to add to the collection.

It simply is the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in a long time.

Available from An Angel At My Table.

Well, the Easter weekend is almost upon us and there is no let up in the frosty weather.  It should be a weekend for a little early pottering in the garden or a spot of diy, but more likely we will all stay hunkered down indoors instead.

I’m planning a little family get together and it might just be the time to shake out that pinny and get busy in the kitchen.  Which reminds me…have you discovered Love from Rosie yet?

For all lovers of shabby chic and vintage inspired homewares.

I’ve been a little in love with the work of Vanessa Conyers ever since I saw a couple of her pieces on the Mia Fleur website.

They are a combination of  glamorous deco-inspired nostalgia and wonkyness.  And yet they manage to convey a magical lightness and the gold touched rims give them a rather shimmering fairytale beauty.

And you know how much I like black lace?

Amazingly Vanessa had never designed ceramics before she was commissioned to make a 100 piece dinner service a couple of years ago.  It took a year to design but the clients were delighted if rather surprised by the outcome.

Thank goodness for open-minded clients!

Do you decorate the house at Easter?

I must admit that it hasn’t always been a big thing in my family.  There’s always a few daffodils around and other potted bulbs but the emphasis is usually on the food and of course the chocolate eggs.  But this year I feel the need to brighten the place up a bit.  Winter is dragging on, and although the forsythia is starting to make a gallant effort in the garden, I still feel the need to mark the beginning of spring in some way.

So, I’ve been looking round for some bits and bobs that just might do the job and these have caught my eye….

Rowen and Wren

Rowen and Wren is always on my list of favourite websites and one of their simple buxus wreaths would be perfect to hang on the door to greet visitors.  And maybe I’ll add to the shopping list a box of their partridge eggs to hang from a few branches indoors.  Don’t they look realistic?

I’m also very tempted by the Keith Brymer Jones Easter tableware collection.  Breakfast in bed would be very nice thank you very much.

New for 2013 is this absolutely delightful collection from Sophie Allport.

Sophie Allport Rose Solo Mini Jug

A delicate pink English Rose that adorns a fine bone china collection including mugs, jugs, plates, bowls, a teapot, a tea tidy, egg cups, tea-cup & saucers, espresso cups and a jam jar.  All the china is hand decorated and finished in Stoke on Trent in the UK.

There is also a pretty cotton fabric featuring Sophie’s illustration that sits on a simple grey ticking background.

“I’m a passionate gardener and the English Rose has always been a favourite.  I’ve loved designing this collection and only ever launch something that I would be happy to have in my own home.  The English Rose encapsulates all that is beautiful about a British Summer garden,” explained Sophie.  “This range helps to bring some of that magic inside!”

Sophie Allport Rose Solo Small Jug

I don’t actually own any cups and saucers…maybe now’s the time!

Available from 1st February.

As another gloomy day dawns I have the perfect antidote.

Normally when you think of Anthropologie you think of bold colour and riotous patterns and all of the glorious hodgepodge of global collections and worldwide folklore.  At least I do.

But I am inexplicably drawn lately to the more neutral treasures available on their site.  The softness of flokarty, the weighty heaviness of french style pottery, the handiwork on their indian inspired cushions and the delicious combinations of metal and glass.

anthropologieThese are all of the things that I would never tire of and I’m not sure I can live without them.  A shopping trip may be on the cards!
