Melanie Porter Take II

Posted by deardesigner in I Spy | Interior Design

I’ve posted about Melanie Porter before but when I saw some of the wonderful things that she has coming up for Tent London next month I just knew I’d have to share them here.

In case you don’t know Melanie is a designer-maker of contemporary knitted interior products. In particular, specialising in the unique practice of felted knit covered chairs and lamps.  Every piece is individually handmade.

Through her work she explores the use of traditional craft techniques to create products with a contemporary aesthetic.  She uses knit to produce the fabric, traditional upholstery to restore the furniture and crochet to create handmade finishes all of which are applied with an interplay of colours and texture to create a piece that is rooted in traditional techniques and is yet contemporary in design, finish and styling.

Don’t you just love these restored vintage cinema seats?  She has sourced a series of original wrought iron cinema seats which are currently being restored before receiving a felted knit cover.  There will be a limited edition of 23 pieces.

I’m also rather fond of the knitted lampshades!

Melanie Porter is showing at Tent London

20-23 September
