I Spy – Himmee Lighting

Himmee is a new Finnish lighting brand founded by Timo Niskanen late last year. This first collection includes eight new products, all designed by Timo, to fit in perfectly with Scandinavian home style in wood, glass, aluminium and material of the moment, concrete.

The Filly lamp (above and below) bears a resemblance to a stick horse so small ears were added to the shade.  The Filly family consists of three lamps: two floor lamps and a table lamp. All the lamps have a concrete base, an oak stem and an aluminium shade. The colour of the shade comes in dark grey or white.

The Lento pendant light gives a pleasant combination of direct and diffused light around the room. The three different lamps of the family are formed using different aluminium shades which were inspired by old UFO cartoons and toys. The colour of the shade comes in dark grey.

Toad lamp consists of three parts; a handblown opal glass shade, an oak wood base part and a textile-coated cable. Special Finnish woodworking skills are necessary for manufacturing the base part and the lamp comes in two different sizes. The colours of the base part are natural oak and black oak.  The name of the Toad lamp comes from Super Mario´s mushroom friend Toad and Timo likens the lamp to a sympathetic and helpless creature which shines its innocence around.

I love that they all have their little stories.

Timo Niskanen
Timo previously worked as a freelance designer for lighting companies doing product and graphical design. He has exhibited lighting prototypes internationally from Milan to New York but was frustrated that his designs stayed as prototypes. Passion drew him to lamp design however and the idea of his own lighting brand developed in his mind. He had doubts about leaping from being a designer to handling the whole business but with encouragement from his family he decided to launch his own lighting brand.
