Book Review – Decorate by Holly Becker and Joanna Copestick

Decorate by Holly Becker and Joanna Copestick has been on my coffee table for some time now. And it’s probably going to remain there for the foreseeable future. You see, it’s the perfect dip in and out book. It has more than 1,000 inspirational design ideas for every room in the house. And that’s a lot of ideas to digest and mull over. If you are a serial decorator like me you’re always looking for the next big idea and it’s lovely to have a compendium at your fingertips to use as a guide as well as inspiration.

Don’t expect one particular trademark look or a particular design aesthetic – this book covers all types. And it’s full of decorating ideas from some of today’s most interesting and creative minds. Add to that the stunning photography by Debi Treloar and you have all you need to make informed decisions and choose the look that suits your lifestyle and situation the best.

Decorate is divided into four main sections.

Space Matters

This section gives advice on how to assess what you have and how to work with it. Always a good place to start. It’s full of useful tips on making small spaces appear larger, how to use the existing architecture to your advantage and how/when to alter the space you have.

Setting Your Style

Provides advice on how to find your own personal through the use of moodboards, by collecting samples, paint swatches and treasured items. All the while demonstrating different looks.

Room by Room

Looks at all of the key rooms in the home from kitchens to bedrooms, living spaces to bathrooms and includes stunning examples. There’s lots of practical guidance too on why each space works so well. A bit like looking at Pinterest but with commentary thrown in.

Attention to Detail

Covers all of the finishing touches that can make or break a room.

My personal favourite parts of Decorate are the many case studies used throughout which illustrate living, breathing homes and how they are used by their owners. Oh, and the quirky little hand-drawn floor plans that are a signature of all of Holly’s books.

Pick it up and dip in.
