Baby Boom and a Gender Neutral Nursery
Posted by in Interior DesignI have nurseries on my mind this week.
I haven’t mentioned this yet but in a few short weeks there will be not one, but two new babies in the family. Yes, both of my BF’s daughters are expecting! Not only that, they are expecting on the same day. Amazballs! And as it will be one of each, it got me to thinking – what if they had to share a nursery? They don’t, but bear with me. How would I decorate a bedroom for one of each sex?
It would have to be with neutrals. The nursery shouldn’t deviate too much from your own style and the rest of the house and above all it has to be practical and safe. I love the panelling in the image above and the calm colour scheme accessorized with natural materials. That chair is just perfect for those night feeds.
Well I wouldn’t mind this floor in my own bedroom! But above all it is practical for play. The rug is a touch of comfort for little knees and the miniature panton chair is one exception to the rule that you shouldn’t buy child sized furniture because they will grow out of it too quickly.
Wall stickers are a great way to introduce fantasy into the room. They are easier to change than wallpaper when tastes change too.
Shelves high on the wall out of the way of little fingers are perfect for displaying favourite toys and artwork.
Another great armchair, this time with comfy footstool too. Above all this room demonstrates that you don’t have to use baby furniture or accessories to create a child friendly, welcoming room.
And no plastic in sight.

I am due at the end of June and looking for ideas for a gender neutral room and I love the first image. I am just wondering where the crib, rocker, and fabrics came from. Thanks!
I’m sorry Jill I don’t know. I found the image surfing the web but if you follow the link you will go to the source.
Im in love with the last image! My favourite nurseries are those that look like they’re for mini adults rather than babies.
It’s a shame more antique baby gear isn’t used – some toys and furniture are perfectly safe and acceptable!
Firstly, CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Secondly, I absolutely love that first image. The panelling works perfectly. I’m definitely keeping that on file
