To nurture romance we have to feed the senses.  No matter what personal style you might favour, whether it be shabby chic or thirties glamour, or Scandinavian cool, it’s important to forget colours and patterns and furniture for a moment, and close the eyes and use the imagination.

1.  The Sense of Touch

In my mind nothing beats the feel of cool crisp sheets against the skin.  Freshly laundered and smelling of the garden air.  The feeling of sinking into a comfortable bed with soft upholstery and duck down pillows.  The softness of a deep pile rug beneath the feet.  Cotton, velvet, silk, linen and fur all spring to mind. Natural fabrics that are soft to the touch and convey a feeling of extravagance.

2.  The Sense of Sight

Morning sunlight streaming through a window.  Billowing curtains, light as gossamer.  The soft light of a shaded lamp.  The flickering of a candle creating shadows in a darkened room.  The sparkle of reflections in a mirror.  For me, all of these things make me happy and contented.

3.  The Luxury of Indulgence.

I’m not talking about expensive purchases but the small things that bring a smile to the lips.  Breakfast in bed on a tray.  A bedside table with a single flower, a scented candle and your favourite book.  A dressing table with pretty bottles and photographs of your loved ones.  A sentimental poem… romantic words… a touch of kitsch.  Why not, it’s a private space.  A room you can really indulge your fantasies.

I’ve just found the perfect website for that perfect gift.  I’m quite particular when buying for friends and family and would never, ever buy anything that I wouldn’t like to receive myself.

Kirsten Bridge set up Lily and Lime to take the hard work out of present buying, and just in case any of my nearest and dearest are reading this.  Here are my five favourite things on the website, that I definitely wouldn’t mind receiving.

Handmade using original old French dictionary pages as the artwork ‘canvas’ for gorgeous ink and watercolour illustrations.  And they can be personalised to make them even more special.

I do like a little bit of bling, and this is handmade, highly polished and ten inches square.  Perfect for after dinner choccies?

Wouldn’t it be lovely to have this hanging just outside the kitchen door? Fragrant and fresh, and just redolent of lazy summer days.

Oh yes, bottled summer!

Created by St Eval Candle Co. under licence from award winning fashion designers, these luxurious candles are not only pretty, but have such evocotive names like Geisha, Enchanted Forest and Tea with the Queen.

Have fun!

I had the pleasure of meeting Rossana Novella the other night and I immediately recognised her flower photography from my frequent guilty perusals of the noths website.  All in the name of research of course.

Rossana was born in Argentina, brought up in Barcelona and now lives in the English countryside which gives her much inspiration for her work.  I just love the retro feel of her photographs.

Her style is quite unique and is created with a variety of old and new cameras, for an authentic vintage look…

and is available as prints, greetings cards, cushions, coasters and place-mats and soon to be joined by mugs and notebooks.  She was quite excited when we met, that she had just seen some of her designs in Paperchase.  Her enthusiasm and passion for her work was very infectious.

She also has a blog which is well worth a visit.  I think we’ll be hearing a lot more of Rossana Novella.

Continuing with my all things Moroccan obsession, I just had to have a peek at the Baglioni Residences that opened at the end of last year.

The 15 residences at this world famous hotel were designed by Jade Jagger for Yoo, the design company founded by Philippe Starke.

She is quoted as saying “It (Marrakesh) has a hippie past and it is still the nearest most-exotic place to the U.K. and Europe.”  I couldn’t agree more.

The show home comprises vast airy rooms, with a mixture of contemporary design and the best of Moroccan details.

The juxtaposition of old and new just seems to work when each has space to breathe. Don’t you think?

Traditional tiles and sleek fixtures. Why not?

Undoubtably this outside space will improve with time. Once the trees and shrubs have grown and provide more shade.

A little out of my price range but the next opening will be at the end of 2012.

Laura Felicity is a London based Designer-Maker with a unique talent of combining unexpected patterns with one another.  Her designs are all hand drawn, handmade and silk screen printed within the UK.

Her colours are soft, soothing and delightfully fresh and just a little Shabby Chic inspired.

The beauty is in the unusual screen printed layers within each piece.  A subtle build up of individual pattern designs that contrast and complement and intrigue the eye.

Her bespoke wallpapers involve options of layered metallic foils and stitch work, layered onto the paper’s surface.  A work of art and utterly unique.

Ingenious ideas for displaying your favourite pieces of jewellery.

If you are anything like me, you have bangles and beads scattered all over the house.  And invariably, out of sight is out of mind.  How nice would it be to have it all on display, like tastefully…

How do you store your jewellery?

This weekend in London was dismal.  Wet, and grey, and cold.

Thank goodness the first daffodils are in the shops!

These cheery little yellow heads certainly lightened the mood and reminded me that spring is not too far away.

And a few little mementos of my travels reminded me that somewhere in the world the sun is shining relentlessly, and soon it will be shining here too.

And for anyone who’s interested…Drawing of Oriental Ladies from Hoi An, Vietnam.  Tablecloth (hanging) from Cusco, Peru.  Bead bangles from Masai Villagers, Kenya.  Jaguar head from Mexico.  Blue jug from Germany.  Beads from Indian Village, Orinoco Delta, Venezuela.  Coins from everywhere!

Always a favourite website to browse, and new stock gets me very excited.  Here are my five favourites…

Black and tan storage trunks for some Hollywood glamour. High heels, tissue wrapped clothes and champagne compulsory.

A ceramic bowl with little perching birds.  A nice addition for that Easter table maybe?

I’ve always wanted a ladder towel rail and this one looks perfect.

I’ve included these pretty lights just because they’re pink of course.

I would like this in my office to store all of my stationery. If only I had the room, if only.
